Hair Loss and Bald Spots

Question
Afternoon Melanie

I am a 34 year old woman who has suffered hair loss through most of my young adult life I also suffered bald spots during my high school years but it always grew back, but the last year I have 'acquired' bald spots right along my hair line, running from my ears right around to the nape of my neck.

Besides for it being quite embarrassing I also suffer severe hair loss, any brushing, stroking or tying into a bun or ponytail leaves me with literally bundles of hair, which is quite scary, any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Nazima: The hair loss you describe sounds like alopecia areata. Alopecia areata causes hair to fall out in patches, leaving smooth round bald spots. With alopecia areata often as soon as one patch fills in with hair another bald patch appears. There are many variants of alopecia areata. Ophiasis alopecia is a form of alopecia areata that causes bald spots on the sides (behind the ears) around to the nape of the neck. The bald spots may coalesce to form the appearance of a band. Diffuse alopecia can be suspected when there is diffuse hair loss along with bald spots. These are advanced forms of alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition. Often the onset and subsequent episodes begin with a "trigger." There are many possible triggers such a infection, allergies, illness, etc.

Determining (and avoiding) possible triggers may help. Essential oils are well known for their ability to help alopecia areata. You can learn more about essential oils for hair loss at the links below. Please let me know if I can help you further.

Sincerely, Melanie Vonzabuesnig
