Question
HI, I have been experiencing hair loss for about 2 1/2 years... When I first notice my hair loss I was in the library and two page full of hair fell out. Since then I am not able to grow hair back. The thinning process has been slower than others but it is thin. My nails continue to flake and I have a rare occurrence of fainting while I urinate after drinking and occasionally sober. My blood pressure is 140/82 and had a blood work done and said no signs of thyroid problems I have been binge drinking for about 7 years on the weekends but rarely drink on the weekdays. Could this be a problem? Family history: my half brother is bald but his dad is really thin. My mom's mother and father had a full head of hair and that is the same for my fathers parents. My two other brothers have a full head and as well as my uncles. Could it be hereditary or a sign of bad nutrition. Thank you so much and look forward in the helping response.
Answer
When you have flaking of the fingernails as well as shedding of hair the problem could be more than just the occasional problem of binge drinking. There well may be nutritional problems that need to be checked out. I doubt this is a hereditary issue although you may get thinning a lot sooner than you normally would due to the stress you are putting on your hair follicles. Hairs follicles are rapidly growing tissues and get stressed out easily when you do not supply them with the proper nutrients and as a result will change cycles which you see as shedding. It seems you may have had Chronic Telogen Effluvium due to chronic binge drinking which may have affected your hair and nails. You should see a dermatologist.
