Question
I've been experiencing TE for about 4 -5 months now from a number of different issues. I am hopeful that it's slowing down... but am still having a lot of loss. Is there any way to tell normal hair loss from hair loss from TE? I know we regularly shed 100 hairs a day, but is there any way of looking at the hair and seeing if it's a normal or because of TE?
Thanks!
Answer
Hi Kaitlyn:
It would be difficult to distinguish hairs that were shed due to telogen effluvium rather than normal hair loss as they both fall from the telogen "resting" stage, and will have the typical small white bulb attached. If your hair is all one length and you notice you are losing a lot of shorter hairs, that would be an indication of telogen effluvium. In the normal growth cycle the hairs go into the resting stage once they have reached their full growth potential. Shorter hairs would indicate that the hair went into the resting stage prematurely.
If the amount of hair being shed daily is consistently decreasing, your telogen effluvium may be ending. Please let me know if I can help you further.
