Question
My son had the swine flu back in the beginning of Nov. and hasn't been well since. He's been fatigued and has had a bad cough all of which his doctors have given him an inhaler for bronchotis and biaxin for I don't know what. I have noticed in the last week when I make his bed that there has been quit a bit of hair on his pillow. I had cancer 6 years ago and worry that it is something serious. Please help.
Answer
Your son most likely has what is called a Telogen Effluvium. This is where the hair goes into a shedding cycle instread of a growth cycle. This condition can be seen after surgery, pregancy, illness etc. If you pull on your son's hair and it comes out there should be a white bulb on the end of the hair. This is a telogen hair and thus thus telogen effluvium. However, your son should have his blood checked to make sure there is nothing systemic that is causing the hair to fall out like thyroid disease.
