Question
Hi I moved to the us 5 years ago. I usually spend a couple of months a year back in my country. Whenever I go back to my country, my hair after a couple of days stops falling. Whenever I get back to the us my hair starts falling again.
What can be causing the loss? Might be work? Stress from there? Might be bad posture (at work I spend 9 hours in front of a computer). Different diet? Climate? Might be that the water contains something I am allergic?
I am puzzled. Any tips, suggestions or recommendations are welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
cristiano
Answer
Frequently patients will ask me if it is the water that causes them to lose hair when they come here from their home country. In fact it is almost always due to stress. Even the change in time zones can cause a shed due to stress called a Telogen Effluvium, add to that the change in so many other things on a daily basis you can easily see there is a substantial amount of stress. Usually the shed takes place four to six weeks after the stress and continues for several months until the causative stressful agent is taken care of. If you fly back home only for a month or so the stress of travel could be starting this off and you do not notice if until you complete the round trip 4 to 6 weeks after first taking off. The use of Rogaine may help stabilize your hair growth and stimulate them to grow back faster.
