My son's spot

Question
My son is currently 15 but when he was 6, he caught a terrible case of Tinea Capitis (Ring Worm of the scalp).  They were all over his head and they all cleared up, except one.  Which left a spot.  He is becoming very self conscious about it and wants to have surgery.  Prior to that option, I was wondering if there was something over the counter that could be used to aide in the growth of hair, in that region.

Any information provided, will be of assistance.

Answer
Hello Vanessa:

Tinea capitis can cause scarring alopecia, especially if it is severe, long-lasting or untreated. Once scarring occurs, the follicles can no longer produce hair. Because this is the only spot that did not regrow hair it is possible that those particular follicles were affected with scarring. A dermatologist or trichologist will be able to tell for sure. If there is no scarring it may be possible to regrow the hair with but the longer the follicle remains unproductive the less chance there is of regrowth.
