Question
Hello Dr. Fisher.
I am 34, a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, exercise regularly, about 6% body fat.
My hair has been thin since adolescence. It doesn't fall out, it's just thin. My crown has always been particularly thin, but not bald. I'm sure much of my psychological self-image may distort my perceptions, but it seems my scalp is even thinner than it used to be. Can hair become thinner without falling out?
I started taking biotin supplements 2-3 weeks ago (about 5,000 mcg a day). Do you recommend any other supplements?
Finally, I?m curious about Rogaine Foam. 1) Is it acquired by prescription only? 2) Does it make hair actually thicker? 3) If results are successful after so many weeks (months?), is it necessary to continue using the stuff for the rest of your life? 4) In your medical opinion, is Rogaine worth the price?
Again, I?m not bald, it?s not falling out. I just want thicker hair and a fuller scalp.
Many thanks for your help.
Steve
Answer
Rogaine foam has been found to be very successful for male pattern hair loss. You need to use this topical medication for 9 months to see it it effective. The only other mediation that has been shows to be effective is the oral medication Propecia. Rogaine for men is over the counter so you do not need a prescription. Once you start this medication you will need to use it the rest of your life.
