itchy, hair loss, redness, inflame

Question
I've gone to a dermatologist and told I have severe dry scalp Rx given clobex and derma-smoothe/fs along with hydroxyzine. I'm receiving some relief but I had to cut my hair just recently due to hair loss, itchiness, and redness in the nap area and it feels better. I noticed that the areas that's red are in a lge to sm circular shape and appears to have some swelling. I also experience the feeling of bugs crawling on the scalp. I've really found more relief by placing an ice pack to the irritated area when burning or irritation flares up. So, my question is will the problem every go away and or will it continue to flare up as it does. I have no chemicals in my hair it's all virgin hair but this problem continues to come and go with constant itching, burning with flame and hair loss . The dermatologist said I had healthy hair but this problem still exist. What else can I do or do you think I could have a fungus of the scalp? Your opinion is most deserving and needed. Thank you, for getting back with me.

Answer
Hello Paulette:

I think it's important to try to get to the root of the problem as to what is causing your scalp to be in such condition. How long has your scalp been like this? Do you have any type of scales or flakes on your scalp? Red circular patches of skin that cause itchiness and flare up could  a symptom of psoriasis. With psoriasis there would also be scales. These scales could be thin and fine.

Right now you are just treating your symptoms without determining and treating the underlying cause. Did your dermatologist give you any more information? The dermatologist would be able to determine if your scalp had fungus. Please supply additional information and I will try to help you further.
